SPECULATIONS ON A DANCING BODY / CAMERA

Within the framework of the exhibition “Ismo, ismo, ismo: Experimental Cinema in Latin America”, the editor Andrea Ancira and the choreographer Aura Arreola present the choreographic activation Anatomy of the Image: Speculation on a Dancing Body / Camera.

A choreographic activation of the diaries of Teo Hernández (Ciudad Hidalgo, 1939 - Paris, 1992), one of the most important Mexican directors of experimental cinema in Super-8 format. From self-exile in France, Hernández devoted himself to a marginal artistic practice within the gay community and Parisian countercultural groups. Throughout his life he shot more than 100 films in different formats (8, S8 and 16mm). From October 1981 to June 1992 he wrote hundreds of reflections in 24 notebooks currently kept in the Bilbiothèque Kandinsky of the Center Pompidou in Paris, in which he exhibits a total involvement with experimentation that leads him vertiginously from the cinema to the alteration of the senses, ecstasy, death, sexuality, the sacred, and finally, to the performing arts and dance. This year, under the name of Image Anatomy. Notes from Teo Hernández,  Buró-Buró and Tumbalacasa edited a chronological and thematic selection of these materials that suggest multiple expanded readings of the research and creative process that underlies the filmic work of this filmmaker, to date, little explored in Mexico.
